來自古法語mastic,樹脂，樹分泌的芳香脂體，詞源同masticate,mouth,咀嚼。因這種樹脂可制作成口香糖而得名。這種樹脂散發(fā)出一種特異的香氣，但是，從各種英文原始資料都未曾指出這種香味為乳香或奶香，故大多數(shù)詞典將該物質(zhì)翻譯成“乳香”明顯受到詞根mast-(乳房，mastitis,mastectomy)的影響，屬望文失義的錯(cuò)誤。類似錯(cuò)誤比較drumlin,鼓丘，實(shí)質(zhì)上與鼓沒有任何關(guān)系。
